One XL power chip replacement
Hello,
To help people with some good solder skills, I just repair an old XL which would'nt start.
Battery was too low, with a charged battery the XL was starting, but it was not starting without battery and was not charging the battery when it was power off. Those two points are not normal.
When the XL is connected to 5v and is powered off, the LTC3455 power chip should send 4.2v to the battery connector, in this case, there was zero volt.
That means the power circuit chip LTC3455 was partially defective and had to be replaced. This is what I managed to do using an hot air soldering station.
Locate the LTC3455 chip.

Cut of the metal frame to get better access. The old chip is removed.
New chip in place. This is a delicate operation, the central ground and the 24 pins should be soldered at the proper place without shorting them.
Repair of the metal frame and card attached to the screen.
Battery is now charging when XL is powered off and connected to 5v and the GPS is now 100% fonctionnal.
In the same manner, I managed to fix several GO720/730, 920/930 etc... which would not start ; it is easier to do on these devices, because the chip is not in an enclosure.manifold Reviewed by manifold on .
