Cure for slow or freeze/restart when navigating to city centres
I have found a bloated Mapsettings.cfg can lead my various TomTom Ones and my Go 720 to pause for ages or even freeze and restart when I ask it to navigate to Address - City Centre . Often this happens when installing a new map. I have Speed Camera POI's with spoken warnings when approaching speed cameras. This information is stored in the Mapsettings.cfg file so I save and use the file from the previous map when installing a new map. To make the map "recognise" the old Mappsettings.cfg you operate the Tomtom on your PC in Tomtom Home and save a favourite. Curiously, the problem of slowness and restarting does not happen when using the device in Tomtom Home. (Possibly because memory is not an issue?)
The problem did not happen if I did not use the old mapsettings.cfg and just let the system create a new "empty" Mapsettings.cfg. But then I have to re-programme each speed camera warning distance which is a real pain.
So I tried deleting all the old destinations (this is offered as an option when selecting Navigate to Previous Destination). I also deleted all my old Favourites which were no longer relevant. This greatly reduced the size of Mapsettings.cfg. Hey presto, the Tomtom now jumps briskly from Address to City Centre to the page where you select Country and City and then starts calculating the journey.
I hope this tip is helpful if anyone else is plagued by slow performance when planning journeys.derryvolgie Reviewed by derryvolgie on . It's just what I'm already do now for several years, I've my own address.ov2 with a small pushpin.bmp
But sure setting all these speedcams is a tough job to do with almost every new map, managing your device via TomTom Home solve that problem
I'm still wondering what the reason is why that mapsettings.cfg is not always compatible with every new map

I think it may be something to do with Mapsettings.cfg getting to large or possibly corrupted. I have used this file from European maps for UK maps and vice versa and it often works ok. But I wonder if a problem arises when there are lots of previous destinations which are not covered by the map?

I think more in the direction of a different format of the file, due to it's still possible to use via a visit to Home and create an extra destination which will be stored with all previous
But I set when necessary all speedcams when it's imposssible to use mapsettigs.cfg, never a problem with my address.ov2
