Tomtom keeps shutting down and restarting
A friend asked me to have a look at his Tomtom XXL which keeps shutting down and restarting when on a journey. I've had a look at it but can't sort the problem. I've tried various things but with no success. Has anybody come across this problem and solved it. I've formated the hard drive and tried various Navs and maps
I'm beginning to think it's a software problem which can't be fixed.
Any help would be appreciated.livvy Reviewed by livvy on . You should check the black screen to see what it puts on the sector protection line.

Sector protection is set to "No". I've had a look at my own XL and it shows "Yes" in Sector Protection field. Could this be the problem.

When you have "sector protection no" you can only install the official navcore from TThome.
You make a backup.
Delete all the contents of your gps unit.
Connect your device to the pc.
You open TThome and the program should install a new navcore, if it does not start navcore 9541, reboot your device and reconnect to TTHome until it installs navcore 9541.
Patch the navcore with TTActivator.
Install a map suitable for your needs, the smaller the better. You can install the map and activate it with TTActivator.Last edited by Orni; 9th July 2021 at 05:25 PM.

Thanks for that. Does TTHome still update Navs for you if TT is empty.
Will this cure the restarting problem or is this just another problem with the Tomtom.

If you do not test we cannot know if it is a hardware or software problem, with these XXL the most common problem is that people put a different navcore and due to "sector protection" the device does not work well.
Changing the files will not make your device worse, you should be careful to disconnect the device safely from the usb port every time you need it.

Unfortunately no success with either Clear Flash or TTHome Nav 9.541 download. The TT is still restarting after about 1 min of loading the maps. I don't know the history of the TT so can only assume something has gone wrong which has made this happen. Looks like it's for the scrapheap.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Is the battery OK, does it have power? Some GPS devices require at least 2 A from the source (cigarette lighter charger).

Yes the battery is fully charged which was one of the 1st things I thought about. There is something it's not liking but I can't find out what it is.
