Any advantages in multiple smaller maps?
Thanks to the existence of this forum I have an ancient Rider 2nd Ed running Navcore 9.5 with a boot loader that allows my rock to recognise a 32GB SD card.
I'm heading from Europe to Africa shortly and trying to anticipate a bunch of 'what if?' situations.
Question is: is there any advantage to downloading a number of smaller area maps (eg Benelux, France, Iberia) over a larger map of Europe?
Ditto Morocco, East, West, Middle, Southern, South Africa vs the big Africa?
Once on the road my opportunities for updating/modifying/routing etc will be limited. I'm thinking stuff like 'if a big map file gets corrupted am I stuffed? Or would a number of smaller maps be logistically safer?'
Are there downsides to having such a large map loaded/running?
Appreciate any thoughts.kiwiwannafly Reviewed by kiwiwannafly on . Any advantages in multiple smaller maps? You can take some smaller maps as a backup if you like but you're better off with the larger maps...the reason being that you can't plan a route that jumps from one small map to another.

As fredderf says, there's no advantage as you'd need to Manage Maps/Switch Maps then reroute etc at the end of each map anyway. The fewer, larger/contiguous maps the better. How about taking a couple of spare fully loaded MicroSD cards with your maps etc on?

Thanks guys - good plan duplicating loaded cards.
I must say I'm pretty impressed inheriting a bricked (no maps recognised) older Tomtom device and now having a fair proportion of the world's maps available to me. You all do great work

A small problem has cropped up for me. I am traveling with Android devices (phone, tablet) but no device able to execute an .exe file. Startup on GPS is often painfully slow - I want to run FastGPSfix every couple of days, but don't know if I can with what I've got. Is there a PC emulator that will work for me to run FastGPSfix on an Android tablet/phone? I can access files on the Rider, but not run.

Not as yet. Limited facilities to access a PC on the road.
