Which Navcore/Map combination gives optimum performance on "Retired" Tomtom One XL machines?
Hi All,
My Tomtom One XL is one of the many devices "retired" by Tomtom on 15th November 2016 () as being too old to keep updating so I cannot officially buy new maps any more (but I am allowed to pay a lot of money for a new device).
My Tomtom One XL base Navcore (operating system) is an ancient 8.010, but that doesn't matter as I have an SD slot which over-rides the boot sequence to allow me to run later versions including v9xx versions. My base map is also ancient (v710.1571), but again my SD card allows me to run v8xx.xxxx and v9xx.xxxx maps. A few years ago I upgraded onto an SD card using Navcore 8.562 with an "SE" Western and Central Europe map driving around Spain with success.
My problem now is that when I tried to load the latest UK map (995.8551 released August 2017) onto Navcore 9.026 it patched and loaded OK. When used standalone it also eventually found a satellite and showed my home address on the screen. However, it was so excruciatingly slow that it would be telling me to "Turn around when possible" some time after I passed the required junction. I believe the problem was the RAM had no spare capacity to calculate the routes.
Similar to older pc operating systems of the same era (Windows98), where the machines can be upgraded to later operating systems (Windows 7 or Windows10), there is a point where you have to stop upgrading because the operating system gets bloated and ceases to run on the available memory. I think the same is true of the Tomtom operating system (Navcore) and I need to know which Navcore version is the last I should upgrade to.
I believe the answer to getting a working map is to use this older Navcore possibly in combination with an older "SE" map. As I understand it, the SE version has a little extra set of software to tell the Tomtom not to load the map into RAM, but to access chunks of it from file as and when required. This then gives more memory in the RAM for processing the route.
The published Navcore/Map compatibility charts are excellent for people with the larger RAM and storage memory machines, but not so good for those of us with older machines. The problem is, without testing each Navcore/Map combination I cannot see anywhere that tells me which is the best combination for my machines limited RAM. Ideally a table for all the "retired" models showing the last stable combination of each Model/Navcore/Map combination would save a lot of people a lot of time, but that would be a lot of work for somebody.
Anyway, my question to your readers is:-
What are the latest combinations of Navcore and "SE" maps that you have found give you optimum performance for both UK and Europe maps on a Tomtom One XL?
I suppose a suplementary question would be, where would I be able to obtain these copies, but once I have the version identities I could probably Google for this answer.

Use a SE 9.510 NC. And then a High-Level-map like United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland_995_8507 and not a Low-Level-map like the United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland_995_8551. For Low-Level-maps you don't need a NC 9, these maps running with NC 8.010 too. A suitable SE-NC can be obtained here:
P.S: You don't need an UK and an Europe-map. The Europe includes UK. There is no Brexit in the Europe-maps

Wow,
Thank you all for such quick replies.
Yes biggerdave you are right I did mean SE navcores. I think I have been going round in circles for so long I was dizzy and got confused.
Thanks Alfred_ML, I'll try the SE 9.510 NC with the United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland_995_8507 that I already downloaded last month. Once I have that running I'll find an equivalent European map and patch that.
I had assumed there were different types of maps but didn't know they were called high level and low level, and I couldn't find anywhere that gives details of the differences. Going into the directories of both the 8507 and 8551 I see that the one you call High level (8507) has a lot more files, so it makes sense.
Once again, thank you all for your help.

Map of London. Drive there. Must be crazy, use Underground or Black Taxis or Buses. Why drive. London is the densest part of the country (and yes dense- thick). No need to use speed cams as snails are not known for speed
One day, someone might make things work perfectly before release. Sadly not in my or your lifetime. At least by finding problems and sorting them, we are still alive.
