Thanks Alfred_ML.
That is very useful information. I had (wrongly) assumed that the higher the number the more recent the map - which is where I was going wrong.
I'll make a copy of this information to put in a Tomtom subdirectory on my PC to help me refresh my memory when I come back to update again some time from now.
Finally, thanks for earlier advice. This version seems to work well - the proof will come when I use it on the road for a longish journey in the next week or two. Search for directions by Street Name works fine but search by Postcode seems to stop after first half of postcode is input, probably something I forgot to patch but the search by Street Name is sufficient for my occasional use of this device. Thanks again.

if you want post codes, for UK and Holland. you will use a directory \zip with files obtainable from
Others should be accessible by typing the zip code though. Depending on where you are looking will determine the number of digits to use. If in doubt, add a 0 at left of digits though. That will sort you out I think. Also, some require a space and others do not, depending on which unit you use. Anyway, you will find that out (hopefully not the hard way)One day, someone might make things work perfectly before release. Sadly not in my or your lifetime. At least by finding problems and sorting them, we are still alive.

....and remember to NOT put a space in between the parts of a postcode. Type for example AB14AE and not AB1 4AE

Thanks for trying to help, but I am afraid it still doesn't work.
If we take the example below from biggerdave and you type in AB14AE (without the spaces) it stops short at AB14 and to get the street you want you have to then select AB14 from the list (AB10 to AB16, AB21 to AB25 etc), then scroll down the alphabetical list of every street in AB14 (out of several hundred) until you reach the one you want. You have to hope your required street starts with "A" not "Y". You are then asked for the house number and it works like normal.
Unfortunately the link you gave takes me to exactly the same postcode file as I am already using (same filesize and timestamp), and is also the one which the Tomtom Support team themselves refer you to to overcome this problem In spite of that I tried renaming mine and loading yours (and theirs) in case mine was corrupt, but it didn't change anything.
I presume that it is not a fault of the postcode database, but rather that somewhere within my unit I have a configuration switch set wrong. All I have to do is figure out where the problem lies and reconfigure it.
Anyway, thank you for doing your best to help. Kind regards.

Hi Biggerdave,
Thanks for your reply, I can see that all the Royal Mail addresses are there, it is just how to get to them solely from the postcode which is causing problems. No the example you gave earlier wasn't a bad example - it is seems to be something wrong with the software. Whatever postcode I put in (mine, either of my sons, or one from an advert) it stops displaying after the fourth letter/digit combination is input and I have to do the rest by means of down arrows.
As I said in my post above, about a year ago the Tomtom support team put out a fix, but the zip file that is referenced to there now still doesn't work for my ten year old Tomtom One XL. I am sure that it is something simple like a single parameter in a config file needing changing or something, but without fully understanding what all the file switches do I will just have to find time to experiment. It is more an inconvenience than a problem, because I can still find addresses the long winded way.
Kind regards

I had the same problem on my old One XL a few years ago so I downloaded the fix which worked fine at the time.
Luckily I still have the file so I've uploaded it for you
When running it, you'll see some different models to pick from...obviously select TomTom One

Hi Fredderf,
Thanks for that, you have made an old man very happy.
I have downloaded it and saved it somewhere safe for future use in case your link disappears. I ran the program and the only thing that didn't work was the link for an update (The Tomtom page referred to no longer exists), but that is not a problem. The main thing however is that I can now put in the full postcode followed by house number and it works properly (i.e. I can get past the four digit constraint). It makes it so much more user friendly again, and allows me to get on my journey so much quicker.
Thanks once again for your time in uploading this.

I came across this thread and wonder if anybody can help with a postcode problem on my Tomtom XL sat nav. A friend moved house recently and on putting the post code in to my nav it found the street ok but when I tried to add the house number it said the earliest house number it can find is 99. The estate has been built since 2016 and I'm using the most up to date post codes in my Nav. Google maps finds his house ok as it's no 13. Using NC 9.541 and most recent UK maps. Is it possible that the post codes are not that up to date. Any help would be appreciated.
