How Can I Place Multiple Maps Inside Same Large Size SD Card ?
Hi, How To Place Multiple Maps Inside Same Large SDHC Card ?
I have a 32GB SDHC card.
I want to place 4 different maps, into it.
So that, different maps can be used on different locations.
My device TomTom GO 50 S now have (built-in with) this map:
USA Canada and Mexico v960.7053 (released 10/2015)
After quick-formating (FAT32) the SD card on Windows-10 laptop,
should i place these map FOLDERS/DIRECTORIES like this. inside the SD card ?
/Western_USA_and_Canada_965_7284
/Southern_US_and_Mexico_965_7283
/Eastern_US_and_Canada_965_7283
/USA_Canada_and_Mexico_965.7250
do i need to modify any further files or folders ? do i need to move some file from each Map into the "root" / area of the SD card ?
Will TomTom GPS unit recognize such arrangements ? will it show different options for loading different maps ? Will GPS unit work ?
Thanks in advance to those users, who will provide helpful pointers/suggestions.
EDIT:
TomTom asked to format the SD card, i selected "No".
TomTom device did not show choice of maps inside: Menu > Settings > Maps.
Except the default built-in Map (which is inside its internal storage: USA Canada and Mexico 960.7053), which it came with.
EDIT:
And Menu > Settings > System > About: showing Free Space: 443 MB Internal memory, 28.71 GB Memory card.mors3d Reviewed by mors3d on . How Can I Place Multiple Maps Inside Same Large Size SD Card ? No problem, TomTom isn't fussy about folder names, as long as the map files are placed in separate folders. And there is no restriction that I am aware of on the number of maps you can put on an SDHC card, other than space requirements.
As far as I know, there is no need to have TomTom format your card. And there is no need for all those old-fashioned underscores either, I don't understand why some people, including TomTom, persist in using them. The need for them went out years ago, as did Microsoft's 8.3 file naming restriction.
What is important is the contained "mapname".pna file. The TomTom system uses this file to recognise the existence of a map, as does "Fastactivate".

I have renamed folders in SD card like this, by using Windows computer:
/Western-USA-and-Canada-965-7284
/Southern-US-and-Mexico-965-7283
/Eastern-US-and-Canada-965-7283
/USA-Canada-and-Mexico-965-7250
I can see "mapname.pna" file inside each of those folders, and each folder also has "mapname-code.meta" file.
(For example, i see "Eastern_US_and_Canada.pna" and "Eastern_US_and_Canada-100673.meta" files, inside the "Eastern-US-and-Canada-965-7283" folder).
Turned-off GPS unit. Inserted the SD card into GPS unit, restarted GPS. TomTom prompted if i want to format SD card, i selected "Cancel".
But, TomTom device still did not show choice of maps here: Menu > Settings > Maps > Change Map.
Except the default built-in map, which is already inside its internal storage: USA Canada and Mexico 960.7053
EDIT:
and Menu > Settings > System > About: is showing presence & detection of the SD Memory card.
Extra info: App v15.600.2176699.311 (0) (2473, 01/13/2016).
EDIT:
By the way, in Windows-Explorer i see below folder inside SD card:
.android_secure
It was not there earlier, i did not create it, so i guess TT GPS unit's Android-OS or TomTom Application inside GPS, has created it. And i think Windows-10 made the empty folder "System Volume Information" inside SD card.
EDIT:
And btw, there is no "*.DCT" file inside any of these map folders. After downloading compressed (rar/zip/7z/zip) map files, i have extracted internal files (by using 7zip software), decompressed inside the default-name folder, and then copied that (default-name) folder straight inside the SD card.
I have copied the long text line, which has format like this: "code-string mapname-code.meta ; mapname", and which is shown next to map download link. Then pasted those codes & texts inside a "meta.txt" file, and then placed meta.txt inside the map-folder, which it relates to.
For example, the file "meta.txt" inside the "Eastern-US-and-Canada-965-7283" folder, now contains this 1 long text line:
46 65 88 6D DC 45 AF 6A B4 46 2B 2B 86 D6 32 3D Eastern_US_and_Canada-100673.meta ; Eastern_US_and_Canada_965_7283

STOP! If you're talking about a GO 50 (new model that uses MyDrive) then it's just not possible! see
The ONLY way to add maps is to buy/download/install them through MyDrive and even then you can only have a single zone on the card BUT you could easily buy any of the full US maps

1-When you connect your TomTom to the computer-the computer sees your TomTom ?
2-You can patch your software?
I think-no, No and no!
This means that even if you're a wizard and will force your TomTom to see new maps on SD-card to work they will not.
Did not have time... Thank you, Dave.

Mind you, TomTom don't like spaces in the name, that's the reason why they use underscores.
All maps need to be into the root of your SD card.
meta.txt file too which and must contain all the codes of the maps you like to patch.
I've a large number of maps on my good old GO910 which I've modified, removed the 20GB HDD and replaced it with a 32GB SDHC card.
Maybe something to think about, I write always the version number in front of the map name.
When there are new maps I keep always a copy of the last but one.
To make sure you switch over to the right map a small modification of the .pna file is necessary
For instance when you have this on the first line ID=Europe.pna2103419604965
I add the version number this way ID=965_Europe.pna2103419604965
When you want to switch to another map, TomTom show a part of the first line from the .pna file
Now you'll see at once which is the new and which the old version due to the version number in front of the map name.
Goodluck.

After connecting the usb cable of TomTom GO 50 S gps unit with Windows-10 laptop, an ethernet network adapter appears, but there is no explorable/browsable drive/storage, i didn't find.
I do not know how to patch the software, unless someone can show/guide. And after 10 days (after a trip with this Tomtom), i may be able to try.
This unit's s/n starts with VI12xxxxxxxx (0), if that helps.
By the way, suppose i change the gps unit with a different tomtom, which will allow me to use maps from SD card, then what steps i should do/follow ? to use multiple maps from same sd card.

1. Forget trying to tweak/play/crack/patch anything on that device, after 6 years our experts still cannot do it!
2. I would suggest one of the x20/x30 devices (520/720/920/530/730/930) as they have an SD card slot & can easily run up to 32Gb cards
Have a read around here & all will be revealed:-
