I have just tried my other GO920 and it connects and updates fine so clearly the PC must be fine so can only be a problem on the GO720. If I could connect it somehow to the PC I could wipe it and start again?

Hold on a minute....
Don't bin it!
If you use TTHome, it should have backed up your device for you unless you turned off the auto backup feature. If not, don't worry as you can re-install the navcore and map onto an SD card from the files on offer here at metanmedia. The only things you would've lost is your favourites and recent destinations which is no big deal anyway.
Try what the others have suggested but it sounds like your internal drive might be stuffed. If that's the case then all you need to do is to put an SD card in there and re-install like I said above. Your device will run quite happily from the SD and you would never know the difference, unless you use a really cheap class 4 card which will be quite slow. Try and get a class 10 card which will be a quick one.

I will give that a try-I assume the items already on the unit will not affect it as there is no way i can delete these?

No problem with these files - just put on SD files navcore+voices+etc, and maps of course, ans never choose map from damaged internal memory

+1 with what rusigor said
Actually, it's a good opportunity to install a newer navcore (9.510) than you probably had before and the latest UK & ROI 960.7056 map with advanced lane guidance too
It's not difficult and would be a very worthwhile upgrade t'boot.
