I assumed from reading about, that the difference between 2049 and 2050 relates to freemium 2049 / Premium 2050

It is as simply as it is.
Install 1.7, run it, making sure you have wifi connection, let it load til you get to the map download screen (DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANY MAP).
Close tomtom go app and restart phone. (DO NOT DELETE OLD TOMTOM FOLDERS, JUST UNINSTALL APP ONLY)
Once phone restarted, install 1.8 patched, and go and download your maps.
Simple as that and all working perfectly.
Best wishes and have a good xmas

Stif58's 1188 version works.
But i have had to go back to the go old v1.4.
I ride my bike alot ad as i do i have my music playing and tomtom in background and works perfectly.
No matter what new go version i.e. v1.8 i use and tested inc the run in background setting, the tomtom app simply closes off when screen goes off.
Music still playing, but no tomtom.
I have to start the tomtom app again, very annoying.
