City Navigator North America NT 2021.20 Maps Kenwood DNX6960
Hi all,
I have an older Kenny DNX6960 head unit and just got the new City Navigator North America NT 2021.20 maps loaded on this. The DNX6960 has a dedicated microSD card reader built in. Just loaded the map gmapsupp.img on the card along with:
GarminDevice.xml
gmapsupp.gma
gmapsupp.uni
GUPDATE.GCD
reset to default and it booted up fine. Confirmed that City Navigator North America NT 2021.20 loaded in the Map Info details.
Hope this helps someone down the road.Shicksa Reviewed by Shicksa on . gmupsupp.unl
no success, should I generate those files somehow? how can I get gupdate.gcd?

Those older Kenwood DNX units were able to run unlocked maps off of an SD card. Anytime a map update comes out, put the new updated map files on the SD card and then stick it back in the DNX unit. Very easy on those older units.
1. You need an SD card formatted to FAT32
2. On the root of that SD card you need a folder named Garmin
3. In that Garmin folder you put the unlocked map file. The map file needs to be named gmapsupp.img and NOT gmapprom.img
4. In the Garmin folder you should also create 3 sub folders named G2S, JCV and MAP. The files that will be put in these folders will need to match the same version of map you are using. For example if you are using a 2021.30 map, the G2S, JCV and Map files need to be from 2021.30 as well.
5. In the JCV folder you will put the JCV file which is your junction view. In the MAP folder you willl put the gmap3d.img file which is for 3D views of buildings if your DNX reciever supports that. In the G2S folder you put the G2S file which is your traffic file if your DNX reciever supports that feature. Even if your unit doesnt support traffic and 3D buildings, having those files on the SD card wont hurt.
Once you have your SD setup like this, stick it back in the DNX unit and you should be running new maps right from the SD card.

I just acquired a Kenwood DNX6960 and wanted to update the maps. I have the latest maps that are unlocked, v2023.20. I can use these in my older GPS's, Street Pilot 7200, and they work great. I load them in using Basecamp or Mapsource, which reports them as being unlocked.
Your post indicates you have loaded newer maps for use in your DNX6960, but it's unclear to me exactly how you did this.
1. Can I use the unlocked maps that I use on my Windows PC, which work fine, or do I need to download some others?
2. The original file name for v2023.20 is: City_Navigator_North_America_NT_2023_20.gmap. So I renamed it to gmapsupp.img like you mention.
3. I formatted my SD card with FAT32, created a Garmin folder in the root, then copied the newly renamed gmapsupp.img folder to the Garmin folder. I read that in the post below following rob21 link. No luck in getting it working.
4. Where and how did you get the four files you mention and are they really needed? GarminDevice.xml, gmapsupp.gma, gmapsupp.uni, GUPDATE.GCD
I did try what joecitizen posted, but so far it's not working for me, not sure what I'm doing wrong.
Thanks for your time, PB

My bad, my first post and I didn't reply with quote, so it's posted twice.
