Unit ID, MapID, FID, PID, RgnID, VenID - these unknown!
This is intended to be a brief description of the terminology used and the definitions of these identifiers
Unit ID
Sometimes called GPS ID or Device ID, and a Unique identifier of a Hardware device (a GPS, a Navigator). It usually consists of 10 numeric digits.
This ID uniquely identifies a Garmin Device and its Hardware, each Garmin Device has its own Unit ID.
This CODE is Personal and should NOT be shared
FID - Family ID value -
Unique Identifier of a set of Maps, often confused with the MapID. the FID is NOT the MapId.
PID - Product Code -
Unique number that identifies the product. The value 1 is usually used.
RgnID - Region Code -
Each product can be made up of several separate regions.
There can be up to 255 regions within a single product, each region can have its own Unlock Code.
VenID - Vendor ID -
Subregion Code, additional identifier for the Unlock Code.
Garmin Unlock Codes are created on the basis of: Unit ID, FID, PID, RgnID and VenID.
Map ID
Identifier of a single "tile" of a Map. This number must be unique among all Maps in a GPS.
A GPS receiver will ignore a second "tile" with the same MapID.
Each "tile" contained in a Garmin .IMG has its own MapID, different from the FID and PID.
Each "tile" has a unique MapID, the "name" of the tile itself
How is the MapID created?
Each Map Producer (MPC user) gets the MapID, and also the FID, along with the license.
In cGPSmapper or Mapwel it is the user who must define the MapID for each tile.
The MapID (8-digit number) defines what is the name for each tile (usually tiles have names (filenames) that increment by 1 each time.
Only the "tiles" have a MapID, but we can find the MapID in other subfiles; for example: MDR files (indexes) contains all the MapIDs of the complete MapSet, the JCVs have the MapID of their own "tile" connected.
Is there a relationship between the FID and the MapID?
A rule may have been created, which I ignore, to calculate the MapID renge based on the FID value, but it may be valid and applicable only for some Garmin Maps.
Example of FID and MapID (extracted from GMapTool) with MapID highlighted in RED, FID in BLUE
