What Files supports my Garmin Device and which Files I should update?
What Files supports my Garmin Device and which Files I should update?
Often, indeed almost always, on the occasion of the release of a release of Maps the Forum is overwhelmed with questions (and therefore of Post) of the type:
- My Nuvì xxxx supports JCV? If Yes, what type?
- Can I install in my Nuvì xxxx 3DBuilding Map?
- Where to copy Maps? In which folder?
All of this information, and consequently many answers to your questions, are contained in the File GarminDevice.xml of your Device.
We learn to read it and understand it.
Where can I find GarminDevice.xml?
- Connect your Device to PC via USB port
- Open \Garmin folder of your Device and you will find the GarminDevice.xml
- Although it is basically a Text File, it has a "formatting" XML. If you open it with a normal Text Editor (like Windows Notepad, so to speak) you will probably see a "tangle" of unstructured characters.
- The best solution, unless you use an Advanced Texts Editor (like Notepad ++), is to open it directly in the Browser (FireFox, Chrome, etc ...).
Browsers have integrated the XML PlugIn so the various "sections" of the File will be much more readable. - Use the "Search" function of the Browser (CTRL + F) to find the Strings in the File
Model, HWID, ID and Firmware release
One of the first sections of the File is the one that contains the Device Information, ie:
Main Map. Search for "PreProgrammedMaps"
Additional Maps. Search for "SupplementalMaps"
Junction View (JCV). Search for "JCV"
My Device supports NT(Unicode) Maps?
Search for "Unicode", if you find section then your Device supports NTU Maps
My Device supports 3DBuilding Map?
Search for "gmap3d", if you find section then your Device supports 3DBuilding Map
My Device supports *.SID Files?
Search for "SID", if you find section then your Device supports SID Files
The list is long, just knowing how to search ...

Help Please
I have a Montana 610. when I look at the folders inside the gps Garmin folder it has a folder called SQL. My question to everyone is this the folder for SQLite files? inside of this folder it has: system.db, UserData.sqlite3, and a temp folder.
I was looking at tutorial and could find anything on the SQL folder. Was just wondering if this is where I put SQLITE files for mapsets.
Thanks in advance for your help its much appreciated.

SQLite folder is used in some automotive devices, mainly for traffic predictions and other specific on-road use.
SQL folder in outdoor devices is for ActiveRouting, a function for customized route suggestions optimized for leisure activities. Quote: "Now you can see with your Garmin the ideal route for walking, hiking or mountain biking". I believe this feature is only available in devices which can fully use Garmin's Topo Pro maps.
Quoting from another forum:
- SQLite - Folder stores .db files : Traffic trends, ecoRoute,myTrends and some user's strings.('quick_search_list.db' and 'recent_searches.db' for example:addresses, post codes). user_strings.db (Destinations entered.) RecentStops.db (Recent stops made by the user, last parking spot) To read these files you can use a SQLite client .
Deleting the 'quick_search_list.db' file will clear the Quick Search items from POI category searches
Deleting the 'recent_searches.db' file will delete the pre-populated items from the Instasearch bar
- SQL - Folder contains SQL/DB-file "Trail Database" for outdoor devices activities.
It displays special routes or information depending on the activity chosen by the user, differentiating between pedestrian activity cycling activity, hiking etc : Active Routing feature in new Garmin Topo maps PRO.
More info about SQL use here in DE:

All Garmin Automotive Device, since 2013 manage folder \Map (either internal or external on SD) for storing additional IMGs.
Outside this folder only two Maps are recognized, gmapprom.img in folder \.System and gmapsupp.img in folder \Garmin
Outdoor Device use instead folder \Garmin (either internal or external on SD) for storing any additional .IMG Maps you want

What devices ? with pictures of your files on the SD card not working.
The garmindevice.xml shows how the .img files are named & where files are on the device and can be duplicated on an SD card
