Stumped.
I used gmaptool (run as admin) to split the gsupmap.img file,
Options
clicked on Advance Options
supplied the path to cGPSmapper
left Mapset Code Page alone = GIU language default
on the Split tab
Chose - Files for Mapsource
ck'd Compile Preview Map
Set the directory to the same as Mapsource
Provided a short Mapset Name
ck'd set mapset ID, ID to 702, set PID to1
Tried with and without specifying a file name
Split All - the process runs to completion without errors, generates a bunch of .img files including the required mapset.img file.
I run install.bat and it completes
Next on to Mapsource 6.16.3.0
this is run just from the mapsource.exe file and it opens just fine. There is no .dll file in the mapsource directory
When I ask it to open any file that resulted from using gpsmap, none of them are a valid mapsource file type.
other than the .img files
there are
,mdx ,.mp, .tdb files
I have repeated the operation numerous times, tried different directories but the result is the same. Obviously I've gone astray but I'm not sure what I'm missing. Maybe the .dll file I've read about.
Thanks for any illumination.

it's obvious that you are a bit confused ...
The operations of transformations from an IMG in a series of Maps version MapSource, the so-called Reverse Engineering must be used ONLY for technical purposes of viewing Maps on MapSource.
Any IMG Maps created by this source will NOT be usable on any Device because the Search by Address function does NOT work.
To view an IMG Map simply copy it to the \Garmin (or \Map) folder of any removable media such as an SD card or a USB key and launch BaseCamp

There is noooo doubt about my being "a bit" confused (despite making a good run at trying to be less confused).
What I was attempting to do is to break the 2023.10 img file down into it's constituent parts and reassemble it as a custom smaller map.
While there are good folks here who do that, I figured if those folks put the effort into creating tools and processes that accomplished that goal, I should be willing to put the effort in to trying to understand them.
As with most any technical process the toughest part is accumulating base knowledge to understand the obscure that is so obvious to those who are already enveloped in them.

This does you Honor, and you are right to continue on this path.
To get what you want you have to download and install the Maps version MapSource on your PC (you can find them in the Thread dedicated at ).
- Extract from Archive the folder City_Navigator_Europe_NTU_2023_10.gmap in C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps\
- Move in the same folder (C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps\City_Navigator_Europe_NTU_2023_10.gmap) the Tool Unlock MapSource.exe and Run it to unlock Maps (do not forget disabling Antivirus before ...)
Subsequently you should use MapInstall (or, if you want MapSource itsself).
Both these software create a custom MapSet (usually namend gmapsupp.img) that must be Unlocked with before using on Device

Thank You.
What I neglected to mention is I was trying with the North America version. Another obvious that escaped me is that the European version would have the same release nomenclature. Still It's worth doing for the knowledge, and who knows, someday I hope to experience Europe or at least parts of it. Perhaps by then the world will be more at rest.
