I remember using that method a couple years ago but, can't remember how so I'm trying to learn all over again. I remember also using Garmin Express in the past with my lifetime subscription but my Streetpilot 2820 is no longer supported & I don't want to get a new unit as I also use the XM radio that it has so I've been using your method but Gmaptool creates a map that is blank. I just haven't yet figured out what I'm doing wrong.
Thanks
Map size worked but, there are no street names only the first letter of the street name.Last edited by Garmin_Nuvi; 6th March 2023 at 09:08 AM. Reason: combined posts

Install it is old but still works well, in the future all you have to do is download the unlocked gmap folder & copy it to C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps on your PC then create your own map set as was done for you.
Unfortunately the street names display issue on older devices appeared a couple of versions ago, those with effected devices with Lifetime subscriptions should contact Garmin N. America or they will do nothing.Unless you are a "New" member, having used the Thanks button regularly is the quickest way to get help.

I contacted Garmin regarding my access to lifetime maps & they offered to replace my unit with a Garmin DriveSmart™ 65 at no cost and they would deactivate my Streetpilot. I declined as I don't want to lose my XM radio & remote control mounted to my handlebar on my Triumph Thunderbird. I will contact them again on the street names issue.
Thanks

That's a great offer from Garmin if they are just going to deactivate the Lifetime map subscription on your Streetpilot as the DS 65's map can be simply be unlocked to work on it,the way many others update their older devices without a Lifetime map subscription.

I've spent some time with this and I am still struggling with a few things. Perhaps easier if I lump all my questions into one post.
I use the information here to program several Garmin devices from 78Cx to 66 Series to 86 Series. Most of the time it is to record tracks for analysis later but often for automotive routing as well.
Mapsource is my main program as it is quick and simple and does what I need but I also rely on Basecamp for more complex operations and for communicating with the handhelds since Mapsource only downloads active tracks from newer units.
I've copied the folder "Unlocked For PC" with the new map to the Garmin Directory and it works wonderfully. Thank you. A few more questions:
- the other files in that archive ("CityNavigatorNorthAmericaNT2024.10Update" and USB_64), what do they do? I am assuming the latter installs the map instead of the user having to move the folder manually? But the update file?
- Should I use Map Install, Basecamp or another program to selectively create a custom map and upload it to the GPS's? Will the be unlocked on the device as well?
- What is the "D9644040A_img" file/map also from this thread?
- Finally, what is the "gmap3d_img" file and how do I install that?Last edited by Garmin_Nuvi; 6th April 2023 at 08:08 AM.

Assuming your devices are GPSMAP 66 & GPSMAP 86 read as they will need to be patched to use Unlocked maps. you will see finding your HWID is key to finding the correct Patched FW.
CityNavigatorNorthAmericaNT2024.10Update.msi is the Microsoft Installer for the Gmapfolder
USB_64.msi is the Microsoft Installer for the USB drivers
Yes the maps created are Unlocked.
D9644040A_img is described in both Post 1 & 2 as for Mexico & Canada
gmap3d_img displays buildings in 3D but is not compatible for your devicesUnless you are a "New" member, having used the Thanks button regularly is the quickest way to get help.

Why is the unlocked map no longer offered? These programs to unlock always have virus or malware !!!
