Best Garmin handheld devices not requiring firmware patching for unlocked .img maps?
Appreciated features: larger hi-resolution screen, fast processor.
I now use the older Garmin Oregon 450t for hiking and geocaching. It still works fine but it is fairly slow and the compass direction is not very good.
I'm interested in buying a secondhand Garmin of a newer generation with a larger screen and faster hardware. I want to be able to use unlocked .img maps without having to patch my Garmin firmware.
Which devices can you recommend? (Garmin Oregon/Montana/Monterra even?)Hyper Reviewed by Hyper on . Best Garmin handheld devices not requiring firmware patching for unlocked .img maps? Just search the thread for Patched firmware for your list of devices if there is a patch it's not for you.

Montana 610.
Moderator Note
HWID 2299 requires Patching to use Unlocked maps
Edit:
I have 3 Montana 610's and none of them required patching to use unlocked maps, I wouldn't have mentioned it otherwise as I did read the first post correctly, re your note.
This forum still has an annoying bug from years ago where it doesn't take me to the correct post in the Universal Firmware Patcher thread when it's been linked to, though at least it didn't cut the thread short like it used to I guess, this time it took me to the last page instead of the post you linked to.
I had to mouse over the post numbers to find the correct one, eventually found it on page number 54, post number 1600.Last edited by Garmin_Nuvi; 22nd April 2023 at 02:54 AM. Reason: combined posts

Apologies I should have been clearer,
FireFox58's post states In this case the Patched Firmware guarantees the correct reading of Unlocked Maps, including NTU and TOPO Maps with CP 65001.
It would appear then all the maps you are using are not Unicode & are CP 1252 ,maps covering Europe, Asia & more with multiple languages are predominantly now.
Model: Montana 610/680 | HWID: 2299 | SWVS: 350 | MAP: Yes | GMA: Yes | MSV: Weak | GVS: --- | File: Montana610_680_350.gcd
MSV: Weak - it verifies the validity of map signatures in a simple way, you can unlock an .img using gimgunlock-0.04 (without patching your firmware), but in case of unicode maps (CP65001) you must modify the CP value (see the Temporary authentication of Unicode maps*).
Hyperlinks are working for me ,if you have an issue just right click the link & "copy link address" then paste into your browser.

Thanks for the explanation, the maps I have are Australian, Oztop V5 and City Navigator something or other 2021-10 I think from memory, I guess they're the older format.
If I right click and copy the link then paste in the browser it lands me on the last page of that thread.
Can't even remember if it was solved last time, I do remember spending a lot of time on it, created a new account and tried all sorts of things, and it was only that one thread, so don't waste anymore time on it.

I ended up getting a secondhand Monterra for a decent price. With a 64GB MicroSD card and a lot of maps. All maps work fine. GPS needed some Android and Garmin updates and works fine so far.
The Android part is all outdated now. Android 4.0 and playstore does not work anymore but it is a lot faster then my old Oregon 450t and it has voice navigation for on the road, which is nice as well. (Oregon 450 just has bleeps)
