Where is the thread that discusses how to install maps on a Garmin [in my case a nuvi 40]?
I've looked through the different section but I can't find a thread that actually goes through a step-by-step process of installing maps on a Garmin.

Welcome to the forum, you don't say what maps, so we don't know if you will need to use an SD card. Your device is very simple, it only uses the gmapsupp.img files & the .JCV files
What like a tutorial section
Unless you are a "New" member, having used the Thanks button regularly is the quickest way to get help.

What Garmin_Nuvi points out is very good.
From the very first Garmin I bought the thing I did was plug the Garmin into my pc to look at the file layout.
Where IMG files are located where the POI's go etc, etc.
Then when I used Garmin Express to update I then used my browser to see what files have changed.
It will clearly show in what directory's what files have changed based on the dates.
The same goes for anyone getting a used Garmin Nuvi.
Some have a SD card already in them.
So looking at the file layout on both the internal and SD card they show where files are installed.
Even if Garmin does not update the maps any more on the Garmin you have and you download maps from here or other places you still can see what files you are replacing before you replace with newer ones and where they are located on your Garmin.Last edited by asprin624; 17th July 2022 at 12:39 PM.
