There are 2 types of Maps, NT and NTU where U stands for UNICODE.
NTU Maps allow the display and search of Names in languages which cannot be represented in ASCII coding, such as Cyrillic, Greek, Polish or Hebrew.
If you use a "standard" language, such as English, French, Spanish or Italian, the encoding is irrelevant because all these languages are included in the CP 1252 encoding (standard ASCII).
By now, since 2013, all Garmin models run NTU Maps.
NT Maps are indispensable for older models, such as 3xx, 6xx, 1xxx series.
UNICODE encoding is 16 bits per character instead of 8 bits per character. This implies a larger size of the Maps, in fact the NTU European Maps are divided into 2 in order not to exceed 4 GB (insurmountable limit for the FAT32 File System).
The JCV files are related to the Junctions View, in practice they are more or less real images of the motorway junctions.
