Need help with SD card for USB damaged 2455LMT, no detailed[and basemap?] map on device too
Hi everyone,
I need help prepare all maps(base/details/...) in SD card for my nuvi 2455LMT.
Some car cable issue damaged my nuvi 2455LMT, some data lost in device, also usb port partially destroyed. Device can't be recognized neither MTP nor mass storage mode to PC. And my device also lost detailed maps(maybe base maps too) along with all my saved location.My car icon just display on a blank background now.
Sadly I didn't back my device before, but I recovered GarminDevice.xml information from local saved data of Garmin Express. I tried install map update directly to SD card(), but Garmin Express failed to recognize my device. So far I have no way to check what's left on my device, so I think I need prepare SD card with as much data as I can provide.
Anyone have any idea how to do so? thanksApocalypse Reviewed by Apocalypse on . Check your device has HWID 1371
garmindevice.xml recovery SD card.rarnuvi 24x5 and 25x5 (GCD File) 006-B1371-00 Release 8.30
Download extract to clean Fat 32 formatted SD card,turn off device fully, insert SD card,power up device.Loader should show.
After all is done you should have the garmindevice.xml from the device on the SD card,move to Garmin folder, clean up/remove all the other files and folders leaving only
Garmin/garmindevice.xml.
Run Garmin Express again and tell us what happens.
Check you PMLast edited by Garmin_Nuvi; 22nd February 2020 at 07:12 AM.

Wow. Nice loader and script, thanks a lot. But sadly the copy operation of garmindevice.xml failed. The update.log shows following:
start>>
Parsing "copy,0:/Garmin/garmindevice.xml,1:/Garmin/Updater/1371/garmindevice.xml"
Error
Parsing "reboot"
<<end
It seems my device was so seriously damaged... I uploaded device_list.xml and garmindevice.xml as you requested, thanksLast edited by Apocalypse; 23rd February 2020 at 02:59 AM.

Hi your garmindevice.xml was also screwed up,I repaired it,cloned your device and Garmin Express now will update.
I would use a tool like TreeSize to list what file are on your device (expand all folders then export as pdf)
Replace the garmindevice.xml on your device with the repaired one and see what happens with GE
Check your PM for link to your repaired .xml.
Do NOT Share your device ID or .xml publicly
Do you know what caused the corruption on your device? if you added file before remove them.
Use a tool like TreeSize to list what file are on your nuvi 2455 (expand all folders then export as pdf)so I can see what files are there.
Replace the corrupt garmindevice.xml on the nuvi 2455 with the fixed one and use GE to update it.Last edited by Garmin_Nuvi; 23rd February 2020 at 08:28 AM.

No sure. When I was driving, which is first time after recent GPS update, the GPS unit suddenly became dark. And when power on again, all maps, saved address, language,voice.. lost. Later I found the joint of ignite adapter and cable seems to be loose. That's the only cause I could find. And then GPS failed to connect to PC, with/without SD card, neither massstorage and MTP mode don't work, no disk drive will be mounted, only can be charged with USB cable. Not sure if internal memory is totally offline since default language and one vehicle icon exists.
TreeSize can be run from SD card? I have no access to GPS's internal memory since USB port is damaged. only options is some automation/boot script in SD card to drive the content copy. Do you have detailed instruction on how to use update.txt? The script you sent me show "error". Not sure if that content not exists in my device or command line in update.txt is wrong. I tried coding similar command(exchange drive letter 0 and 1) to copy the file back to device, also shows "error". Any file list command or wildchar copy command exists? I did following file copies too. Does that mean GPS' internal memory is totally screwed?! Maybe need format or what. But so far the unit can load maps(base,detailed,3D maps) from SD card Garmin/ folder, it seems to be specified in GarminDevice.xml (<dtlx:ExternalPath> node ). But voice/keyboard and other assets are not specified with this ExternalPath node, so that not load from SD card yet...Any idea to fix that?

@Apocalypse
Usually but not always when the USB socket of a Garmin device is loose and only partly operative, like in your case allowing charging but not PC connection, re-flowing the solder connections between the socket and the PCB will restore full operation. Sometimes there is also component damage to the PCB which isn't so easily fixed. If the socket remains partially inoperative after restoring the solder connections then it's still possible to delete from and load any files to the main memory by using SD text commands. That requires initially using a USB stick/media card clone of the device of course to download the required files using WebUpdater and/or GarminExpress. Mostly, simply using an otherwise clean USB device with the [perhaps modified] GarminDevice.xml in a Garmin folder on the USB device is sufficient to get what you need from the Garmin servers. Then use appropriate update.txt to send new files as required. Be aware that many modern devices (those with on-board RWFS) write to and read from the media card as "2". The path "1" is for the usually hidden RWFS partition in those devices. I haven't checked which path is applicable for nuvi 2xx5 series but i recall unclearly that it's 2 and that the non-vol is in region 154 not 41 as in earlier devices.
Hopefully just restoring the socket/PCB connections will work for you. Post again if you need more guidance on writing and using txt commands for ongoing use.

@B1ng0
Thanks for your instructions.
With help of @Garmin_Nuvi, I already prepared the SD card as device by recovering GarminDevice.xml. The Garmin Express can update somehow, but contents failed to copy to device after loader update. And now so far maps can be loaded from SD card, but none of other assets. And I failed to copy those assets to device memory manually with update.txt.
I already did some experiments with update.txt to issue some command with loader. And I can't copy anything from/to drive 0 according to the result(I did try copying GarminDevice.xml out from device and file to device). And in my device, drive 1 is the SD card, I already proved it by successfully copying something from drive 1 to itself. And no drive 2 can be accessed so far.
Parsing "copy,1:/Garmin/GarminDevice.xml,1:/Garmin/GD_Backup.xml"
Success
Parsing "copy,1:/Garmin/GarminDevice.xml,0:/GarminDevice.xml"
Error
Since device 0 can't be write nor read, I think I need reconstruct this area via USB or SD update.txt if the hardware is still functional. Could you please give more guidance on those commands in update.txt?
And I'll try reflowing the solder asap. Thanks

@Apocolypse
It seems you have a device without the onboard RWFS partition in that case, or the path "1" would not write to the card.
Are you absolutely sure that "0" cannot be written to or read from? Your second command should show "0:/Garmin/GarminDevice.xml" as the destination path. Using GarminDevice.xml as a test to write to the device internal memory is pointless in normal operation as it gets over-written on every reboot anyway. Try to copy something more permanent like a VPM file to Voice folder or a GPI file to POI folder on the internal memory.
I'm not sure if links to other forums are allowed here but i've seen other posts with them, so look at this G P S Power thread for all possible commands:
The actual txt commands have to be recognized in the device firmware for them to work however your NA nuvi 2xx5 device should be able to use all of them detailed in the initial post of the above thread. If you know how to do it, you can check the fw in a hex editor to make sure they're there... or just try in practical tests using suitable commands.
Reflowing the connections is quite likely to fix your problem in my experience, 90% chance if done correctly. Google for videos if you're not experienced with fine soldering.

I redo some tests and still got same result:
1. Drive 1 is my SD card, I've tested that the SD card will have GD_Backup.xml after boot with SD card ldr.bin
2. I've tested that Drive 0 can't be written with following commands, both root folder and Garmin/ folder are not accessible(check log from update.log). And I also tested that both /.System/GarminDevice.xml and /Garmin/GarminDevice.xml are not accessible.
Here's the content from update.log:
