GPSMAP 66st First Impressions
It’s buggy as hell
Once loaded with the same Birdseye imagery that my 64st has, the 66st just powers off all the time when browsing the map, where the 64st does fine.
I’ve also found some simple ways to make it switch off, like go into the menu, select recording, press left or right to cycle the options,
exit the menu, and it powers off.
These aren’t the only glitches I’ve found, but they all seem to either power off the unit, or crash it so the batteries have to be removed to power it off.
Not recommended by me as an upgrade, until they at least give the firmware a pretty thorough overhaul.
I’ve never bought a new GPS unit of Garmin’s so hot off the press, so not sure if they are all like this to begin with.
If I were to go on a trip right now, I’d leave the 66st at home, and take the much more reliable 64st instead!
Searching addresses does not work at all, so you can’t make a route when provided with a destination address. You have to find it on the map.
No patches support it yet BTW.. but that I already knew of, and am just using it’s built in topo map.
Cheers!

Based on experience I'd say that that sounds like Garmin.

Hi, there is no patch that I know of for 66 series yet, and there’s also no need for me to patch it.
Aside from the topo lite built into the st option units, I have purchased the full maps shown in the video.
It would be silly to make a video complaining about it if I did something to it, or tried to use pirate copies on a unit that wouldn’t read them.

Ps. I’ve done things with 64st here, but that’s a different story. If it were possible to revert it's firmware back to original,
and for the DVD topo map I paid for to work on that, I’d be happy, and would have never made an account here.
That little fantasy includes having the manufacturer’s warranty on the new original hardware too.
What pisses me off the most is that I feel like I damage my integrity having paid for everything, and the **** doesn’t work.
I made every effort to do the thing properly, set up Basecamp, the Explorer plugin DID eat my map serial number, but not unlock the map.
Difficult to join their forum, unanswered emails to the webmaster via the forum link, unanswered emails through Garmin support.
The only thing that’s difficult to do is call them on the phone in business hours. Talking to someone who didn’t write the thing.
Because that’s all the whole unit is. The hardware is still nice if you overlook a few moderate issues, but if they can’t write software properly,
the hardware running the software you don’t quite trust is also of little use. I kind of forgot about that dilemma with the 64st.
