Garmin Nuvi 855 NA
Hello;
As i am using the internal hard drive and space is getting pretty tight with newer updates, little space is left.
Can i use the external SD card slot to continue using the map updates? Is there a limit on how large an SD card
can be in the Nuvi 855? And if it is possible, what steps need to be taken as to how this is done in closing the file on the hard drive
and repositioning it on the external sd card? Will the unit sense it automatically? Many thanks in advance for any advice that

OK, I called Garmin and i got the low-down on what can and cant be done in reference to this unit
The maximum capacity that i can use is 8GB being an older unit, the new ones take up to 64GB of external storeage
Yes i can use the SD Card slot in the Nuvi for bigger files than the actual hard drive (4GB) can support.
So I should be good for awhile with map updates lol
What is on the hard drive has to be transferred one for one to the SD Card for this to work.
Hope this helps others with similar questions as mine

I have used a 32GB microSD card on my Nuvi 855/885s for some time
This is what do:
1. Format microSd card to Fat32 (that's what Garmin needs)
2. I put two folders on the microSD card. One named "Garmin" and the other "Media".
3 The "Garmin" folder has four sub folders named ASR, GPX, JCV. POI. These folders are used to unload the mapsets and related files from the limited Nuvi memory.
4. The "Media" folder can be used for any music. audiobooks and pictures you may want to store. Create sub folders if you want. The Nuvi makes a good audiobook (in mp3) player which you can listen to while driving.
5. The GPX and POI folder can be used for and custom POIs and GPX files you may use.
7. I move the "gmapprom.img" (preinstalled maps) file in the Garmin directory on the Nuvi to the Garmin Directory on the microSD card. You have to rename this file to "gmapsupp.img" because that is the only mapset filename available for the microSD card.
8. You can also move ONLY the files with an SRX and ASR extension from the ASR folder on the Nuvi to the ASR folder on the MicroSD card.
Each mapset has a related group of these files. Quantity varies by mapet. (North America NT has two files one ASR and one SRX) (Europe NT has nine files eight ASR and one SRX).
9. In addition move the files with a JCV extension from the JCV folder on the Nuvi to the JCV folder on the MicroSD card. Again each mapset has a related JCV file.
This should free up space on your Nuvi. The "gmapbmap.img" (base map) file can be left in the Nuvi Garmin Folder. It does not take up much space. You can also have a mapset file named "gmapoem.img" (Oem maps) and a mapset file named "gmapsupp.img" in the Nuvi "Garmin" folder. On microSD card you can only have a "gmapsupp.img" file.
As mapset grow the limitation will be the 4GB file limitation of the FAT32 microSD card format.
